My favorite method of teaching reading and spelling is with the Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Program or LiPS. I find this method to be the most effective in development of phonemic awareness skills because it incorporates almost all of the senses. LiPS is like giving children an understanding of language that is like family. Using LiPS we learn together how sounds and then words are formed in our bodies and we give them nicknames just like we do with family members. Tying sense- memory with a familial warmth, LiPS gives a friendly face to phonics which can be a daunting challenge, by guiding children in the how of language instead of just presenting and enforcing invisible and seemingly illogical rules. LiPS allows for each child to exercise their own self-determination by becoming a part of the discovery process too, giving them ownership of their adventure.

The Writing Road to Reading

Having taught both primary grades and upper grades at a traditional academy for eight years, we daily used the Spalding curriculum. I find this multi-sensory method to be very practical for students in learning all of the sounds phonetically as well as learning many spelling rules. It is especially helpful in teaching students with learning disabilities to read and write.

Math

Many parents feel that they don't understand today's math. Having taught it for a few years now, I enjoy reinforcing math by teaching children to use their ideas and the strategies to help them solve problems themselves. I engage them in activities at their own level so that math makes sense to them.

I have had the privilege to work with Julie for 8 years. She is an amazing and dedicated educator. Her ability to connect with her students and meet them where their needs are is amazing. She is creative in helping students develop a love for reading, math and writing. She is an amazing teacher and tutor.

I have taught with Julie Stevenson for over 15 years at same middle school and elementary school. After I retired, I subbed in Julie's classroom for several years. Julie writes clear, concise, and detailed lesson plans that are easily implemented making the day go smoothly for the visiting teacher and more importantly, students did not miss out on a day of learning. Julie's classroom management skills are top notch and student expectations are clearly outlined and posted in her classroom. Her classroom was a bright, cheerful, print rich environment where students enjoyed learning. She always had premade materials and manipulatives on hand to enhance student learning. Julie worked on professional growth, attending classes in the evening, as well as workshops and training. Learning as much as she could, bringing that knowledge back to the classroom, and using those new ideas to further help students. Julie spent countless personal hours tutoring her students during lunch, before and after school to help them achieve their goals. In conclusion, Julie is a master level professional who cares deeply about students and after subbing for her for several years, I also know that her students care deeply about her as well. I highly recommend Julie Stevenson as a personal tutor for children.
